Nestled between two mountains in the northern tip of Bridgewater Township in Somerset County, lies scenic Sunset Lake. Sunset Lake was developed during the late 1920’s by ” Doc” Meiner, who owned most of the surrounding land. A veterinarian by trade, “Doc” Meiner was an avid outdoorsman and horseman who labored to create this special place using non-mechanized scoops and horse drawn wagons to move the earth. Over the years, he sold his properties to others who shared his love of nature and subsequently Sunset Lake Association was created. Before his death, “Doc” Meiner donated the lake with the hope that the community would preserve his creation for years to come.
Year-round recreational facilities offered to Sunset Lake community club members and guests include a swimming beach and children’s playground. The swimming area provides lifeguard supervision during swimming hours, with changing facilities and restrooms available. Members also enjoy the lake for fishing, sailing and other non-powered boating.
Besides the beach and recreational facilities, members and their guests enjoy social activities for all ages — from children’s holiday parties to family outings and theme parties for adults. All activities are planned and managed by member-volunteers and are limited only by their imagination and initiative. Membership provides an opportunity to meet people within the community and has led to the formation of children’s play groups, card-playing circles and lasting friendships. Sunset Lake community club is an ideal way for new residents to make friends in the area.
